Youth Development Certificate Program
The Lung Association’s Youth Advocacy Training Institute (YATI) is proud to offer the first Canadian Certificate program in youth development. This Queen's University accredited program will equip adults with the knowledge and skills to develop experiences for youth to reach their full potential.
The Training:
This 5-day training will provide a fun, comfortable atmosphere. By using a facilitated cooperative learning environment, you will work with other participants to encourage each other’s learning and have the opportunity to develop a strong professional network. You will be able to link new knowledge to past experiences and prepare to carry them into future practice.
This particular session runs over 5 consecutive days.
Monday - Friday, February 13 - 17th, 2012;
Breakfast from 8am-8:30am
Course from 8:30-4:30pm daily.

The Approach:
The youth development approach is rooted in viewing youth and their assets rather than their problems. In order to work with youth effectively, it is essential to build adult capacity to support positive youth development through practices, processes, policies, and programs.
The Content:
We’ll introduce you to the core principles and practices associated with the youth development approach from a Canadian perspective to:
• learn about youth engagement as a strategy to support positive youth development;
• identify and negotiate assets/barriers that will influence your practice with youth;
• assess individual and organizational readiness to apply the approach within your setting;
• work in youth-adult partnerships;
• develop strategies to monitor, evaluate and extend these efforts.
Cost:
The cost of the full five-day certificate program is $350 per person. This cost includes all required materials and includes breakfast, lunch, and refreshments. Please note we have endeavoured to keep fees low during this research phase.
Upon registering for the course, you will be emailed an invoice for the full amount of the certificate program. Invoices can be paid through a cheque or money order and must be received by February 6th.
Eligibility:
In its first three offerings of the program Queen’s University will be conducting a research project investigating the outcomes for adults and the youth they work with who complete this certificate program. As a result, there are a few requirements that exist for enrollment for these first three sessions, including that:
NOTE: RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED:
* You currently work with youth and will continue to work with youth after the course
* You and your youth are willing to participate in the research study
This course will be offered again in the spring 2012 with no eligibility requirements. If you are unable to attend the initial offerings we would appreciate your help as a ‘control’ participant in the research study.
The Research:
